Keyboard and Piano

Okay so technically Piano lives in the percussion family but it is so prolific and varied we thought it deserved its own category here!

The keyboard team are able to teach both electronic keyboard and piano in individual, small group and larger ensemble lessons.  A mixture of traditional and  popular music is used, and improvisation and composition are also included.  External examinations in all styles are possible at all ages, and ensemble membership is encouraged.

It’s a small family but the possibilities are endless!

Piano

Pianos come in various shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common, they are heavy! This is because inside all of the wood there is a large metal harp which you hit with hammers attached to the keys.

Did you know? in July 2020 Lego released a working Piano model made up of 3,622 pieces!

Keyboard

Where as the piano is entirely acoustic keyboards are entirely electronic! This allows them to sound like any instrument you can imagine, and even some that don’t exist! The keyboard makes for an excellent introduction to keyed instruments which it’s fun sounds and non-weighted keys!

Did you know? We all love the DJ sound effect on our keyboards but did you know some of these are actually used in songs? The Klaxons used some of these sounds in their song Atlantis To Interzone.

Synth

Synthesizers are the bridge between audio and electronic and are the origins for many dance genres. Keyboards wouldn’t exist without synths predating them and leading the way to synthetic sounds in the mid 70s! These devices create sounds with the use of lots of electronics which is a hobby of it’s own!

Did you know? The largest synthesizer to exist takes up an entire room, has a name (TONTO) and was famously used by Stevie Wonder throughout his work!
