Ralph Vaughan Williams’ fabulous Sea Symphony (1910) is the centre-piece of Three Spires Singers’ first autumn concert this year. Performance requires a large orchestra, soloists and choir – the latter forming an intrinsic part of the whole work. Using words from the visionary American poet Walt Whitman, Vaughan Williams vividly paints all the moods of the sea and Whitman’s awe and exhilaration. It’s colourful, exciting and moving by turns.
Conductor Christopher Gray describes it as "music that encapsulates vividly all the moods of the sea, but also Whitman’s metaphors: Whitman presents the sea as something awesome and deeply spiritual that is a great leveller, uniting us all in various ways, but in a world where things are not always plain sailing."
The programme also includes two works composed at the very end of the nineteenth century: Sibelius’s Finlandia is a stirring tribute to his beloved homeland; in Elgar’s Sea Pictures for mezzo soprano and orchestra listen out for the opening poem by Roden Noel which evokes Kynance Cove!
