George Leggo Charity Concert

George Leggo Charity Concert

George Leggo has been a member of Treverva Male choir for 50 years this year, and for 12 years was a member of Eight in a Bar.  When very unwell recently he greatly benefitted from care received at Marie Therese House in Hayle.  To express his gratitude a benefit concert has been arranged for Saturday 4th August at 7.30pm at Penryn Methodist Chapel, to include Treverva Male Choir, Eight in a Bar and Mabe Ladies.   The compere will be George's son Colin who you may have seen or heard of as a stand-up comedian.  Please try and support this great cause, and have a great night out at the same time.

CORNWALL MUSIC SERVICE TRUST PUPIL OF THE MONTH AWARD (POTMA) - APRIL 2018 WINNER

CORNWALL MUSIC SERVICE TRUST PUPIL OF THE MONTH AWARD (POTMA) - APRIL 2018 WINNER

PoTM April 2018.jpg

Congratulations go to Daisy Groseley who has been awarded the CMST Pupil of The Month Award for April, 2018.

Daisy is an aspiring young Flautist who has been a successful product of the First Access programme. Originally learning clarinet through whole class ensemble teaching, funded by Arts Council England via CMEH, this fully funded initiative has given Daisy the experience and enthused her to carry on learning with Verena Watkiss. Further details about this funded delivery can be found at: https://www.cornwallmusicservicetrust.org/funding-subsidies/

Mrs Watkiss had some wonderful things about Daisy in support of her nomination.“Daisy started learning flute with me in year 2 and has always been very enthusiastic in her lessons and playing. She has always been a quiet girl, but listens well to advice and takes this on board in her playing.”

“Since learning clarinet in her class first access sessions, she has now joined our Helston next steps ensemble. Since joining this ensemble, Daisy’s playing skills have improved, and her confidence as grown immensely. I am excited that Daisy will be playing at the Wall music festival later this term with the ensemble, and as a soloist.”

Mrs Watkiss summed up by saying “Daisy is a real pleasure to teach, and is always happy to get involved with school and local events. It was great to see her perform in the school music concert, and the Cornwall Flute Festival at the end of last term.”

Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, said “It’s great to see the results of the First Access delivery model producing young musicians such as Daisy. This is testament to the commitment of both the teacher and pupil. Encouraging and enthusing pupils at an early stage is so important and the engagement of the pupil is imperative.”

“Well done Daisy on achieving this amazing award, you now join a special group of children that have been acknowledged for their super hard work and commitment. Keep up the good work!”

Brass Bands On The March at Bugle

Brass Bands On The March at Bugle

Saturday 16th June will see eighteen brass bands marching through the Mid Cornwall village of Bugle at 10am at the start of the 94th West of England Bandsmen’s Festival. The Bands are judged on their Deportment as they make their way to the Contest Field for the day’s Contesting at this unique open air Festival, where Mark Wilkinson, this year’s music Adjudicator, is making his first appearance, with Jonathan Lush Camps LRSM acting as the new Deportment Judge.

Several thousand spectators from all over Cornwall and the United Kingdom line the main street to cheer on the Bands, before making their way to Molinnis Park to hear them compete in the seven different Sections, including Youth and Training, included as the organisers are particularly keen to encourage young musicians to participate in competitive music making.

This year the Festival is particularly pleased to welcome the Spijkerpakkenband from the Netherlands, as well as Bands from neighbouring Devon and Dorset, to join the Cornish Bands in friendly competition.

Prize money totals some £4000, with £1000 going to the winners of the Championship Section, as well as the prestigeous Royal Trophy, presented by the then Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall to the Festival in 1913.

The Royal Connection with the Festival is still maintained as HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall is Patron of the Festival.

Well over 40 other Trophies are presented throughout the various Sections, including 12 special Soloists Awards, which are eagerly sought after by the Musicians.

The Festival, situated since 1912 in the heart of the Cornish China Clay Country at Molinnis Park in Bugle, provides ample parking in view of the Bandstand, and with comfortable seating available, this sets the scene for the audience to enjoy the attractive selection of Test Pieces, chosen not only to test the Musicians, but to provide entertainment for those listening.

With Trade Stands and the famous Tea Tent, a full day of entertainment, socialising and enjoyment is guaranteed. The March to the Field at Molinnis Park commences at 10am, with the Contest commencing at 11am.

Magical Music in May at Polgwynne 2018

Magical Music in May at Polgwynne 2018

As Cornwall basked in glorious weather last weekend the gardens at Polgwynne, near Feock, resonated to the sound of young Cornish musicians at the Magical Music in May festival.

CMST were delighted to have been invited back by Amanda Piercy, the owner of Polgwynne House and Gardens, to raise funds for the Trust and to give an amazing opportunity for some of CMST's young musicians to perform in a stunning setting.

Here are some photos of the event which raised approximately £1200 for CMST funds.
