A concert not to be missed!

Featuring talented young Cornish singers and performers from around the country, including current West End performers who will be performing Musical Theatre and Classical favourites. An evening of pure talent for you to experience and enjoy.

In 2012 the Chris Treglown Foundation Fund was set up in memory of a young Cornish singer and now 10 yrs down the line that Fund has helped young Cornish singers and young singers from around the country by awarding monetary awards, providing workshops and opportunities for performance. This concert supports the Fund and features talented young singers from Cornwall and around the country who have won the Award as well as other young singers who have been involved. You will be listening to stunning musical theatre and classical delights and this concert will feature a current lead role performer in the West End production of Les Miserables. Cornwall Music Service Trust Gala Concert and Pupil of the year award

On July 8th 2022 the Cornwall Music Service Trust will be putting on their Summer Gala concert in the gardens of the Princes Pavilion, Falmouth.

Come see an amazing set of performances from some of our incredible young musicians from the Cornwall Music Service Trust. There will be a mix of singers, instrumentalists, soloists, ensembles and the Mabe Ladies Choir. An evening of music in celebration of the life of James Sargent with something for all to enjoy.

Bring a deck chair, a blanket and a picnic or there will be food stalls along with the cafe and bar which will be open.

A retiring collection will be taken for the James Sargent Early Years Music Education Trust.

No need to book tickets, just turn up and enjoy!

For the younger musicians there will be a free music workshop earlier in the day along with a Maestro Tots concert for our future young musicians.

Elevate Youth Conference

Elevate! – An online youth conference designed by young musicians for young musicians across the UK! – Sunday 3rd July 1.30-5pm

Following a successful bid for an ‘activate’ award funded by Sounds Connections, the Tri-borough Music Hub Youth Voice Council and Kingston Music Service Youth Forum have joined forces to co-curate their first ever online youth conference for young musicians across the UK. Both Youth Forums have been working together online and in person at the Royal College of Music to plan, produce and curate this exciting online free event open to all 10–18-year-old musicians.

With interactive workshops (including beatboxing, jazz improvisation and body percussion), attendees will have the opportunity to hear what’s going on in other hubs around the UK from young people themselves.

Join us for this free conference, where music education matters!

With guest speakers including MOBO award winning Moses Boyd, and workshops by Shamime Ibrahim, Matt Holborn and Inspire-works, young musicians will have the opportunity to have their say on what they want from their music hubs and how we can ensure every young person in our local areas have equal access to music tuition and opportunities for music making.

SuperStrings Summer Spectacular!

The Cornwall Music Service Trust SuperStrings are back and bigger than ever! The SuperStrings are beginning to reach orchestral size with the addition of percussion, woodwind and brass making the group bigger than ever!

One Small Bird at The Minack Theatre

A song cycle inspired by the RSPB’s 2014 discovery of the migratory route of one of Britain’s rarest birds, the red-necked phalarope.

Facing huge obstacles, this tiny creature which weighs no more than a packet of crisps, successfully crosses the Atlantic between Shetland and Peru every year. It passes through environments as diverse and challenging as the icy regions of the north and the storms of the Caribbean.

This little bird’s journey tells an inspiring story about strength and resilience in the face of harsh conditions, and of the unstoppable drive for survival among earth’s creatures.

One Small Bird has been performed by young people and community groups across Britain and we are thrilled to share this extraordinary story with you at the Minack, through the voices of the children of Cornwall.

South West Youth Orchestra 2022

This exciting opportunity (made possible by South West Music School) will take place from August 15th-19th 2022 at Millfield School, Somerset.

The 5 day residential course will be free for all musicians 18 and under accepted on the course. Applications from over 18s are also welcomed and if accepted, applicants will be asked for a contribution towards accommodation and meals of £175.

The aim is to give talented young musicians (Grade 7+) a one-off opportunity to meet and rehearse with like minded players from the wider South West region and to form a full Symphony Orchestra.

South West Music School are delighted to be launching South West Youth Orchestra 2022! 

South West Youth Orchestra is an exciting and forward-thinking new youth orchestra,  designed to equip the region’s most talented young musicians with the skills they need to  build a positive future with music.  

SWYO musicians will be guided through an intensive 5 day residential course by a passionate  team of professional orchestral musicians who have a wealth of real work experience.  

As well as rehearsals, sectionals and the final performance, SWYO musicians will benefit from  a number of enrichment activities designed to support them in their development as  emerging orchestral leaders.

Monday 15th - Friday 19th August 2022 (including a final performance on 19th August)  Course Venue

SWYO 2022 Fees  

The true cost of putting on South West Youth Orchestra is in excess of £550/person.  However, we are determined to ensure that the region’s most talented young musicians can  participate in SWYO regardless of their financial situation.  

Therefore, we ask over 18s for a contribution of £175pp towards the cost of the course.  

If you would like to apply but are unable to contribute the £175, please get in touch with us  by emailing swyo@swms.org.uk – this will not affect your application.  

Current SWMS students ,SWMS alumni from 2020 or 2021, and non-SWMS students aged 19  and under: Please note that South West Music School will fully subsidise your place on South  West Youth Orchestra this year.  

Repertoire  

In 2022, South West Youth Orchestra will perform the Brahms G minor Piano Quartet, as  arranged by Arnold Schoenberg in 1937. We will be diving into this rarely performed piece,  getting to grips with the transformative structure, capturing the essence of the “gypsy  rondo” and generally finding our way with this neglected masterpiece. Cornwall Youth Brass Band Play Day

We are super happy to announce that there will be a new Play Day presented by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band in collaboration with the Cornwall Brass Band Association.

This will be taking place at Truro College on Sunday the 26th of June between 10am-1pm.

“As we are now moving forward after a dearth of music making over the last 2 years we wish to encourage, particularly our up and coming  youngsters, to come and share this day with us to make music.”

Three Spires Singers Concert on the 2nd July

What a season this is proving to be for Three Spires Singers! There has been great response to their boundary-pushing programmes with Graham Fitkin’s new Humphry Davy work in November and then Russell Pascoe’s original take on the requiem genre last month. It was wonderful to see so many of people at these first two concerts “post-Covid”.

For the Three Spires Singers July concert they are going back to some enduring, established classics by Mozart and Haydn.

Mozart’s C Minor Mass is full of angst, drama and unfettered joy, but there are also moments where Mozart shows his gift as a writer of melodies that transcend worldly things and take us onto another plane. Exhibit A is this clip from Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s recording of the work which I listened to a lot at university – the central ‘Christe’ section will melt even the most stressful of days: click here -

As well as lots of involved writing for the choir, the work showcases two soprano soloists. You need exactly the right singers for these, with a tonal palette and vocal technique worthy of the music. Fortunately, the Three Spires Singers have Kirsty Hopkins and Rhiannon Llewellyn who I assure you will be worth the ticket price on their own.

They will be welcoming back Frederick Brown to play Mozart’s 23rd piano concerto. Freddie has performed since his days as a chorister in the cathedral choir, (you may know his parents Ian and Sarah who are linchpins of Three Spires Singers, among other things). It has been wonderful to follow his journey through Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music to his current position as a pianist and conductor with Welsh National Opera. Freddie has always thought deeply about music (and many other things!) but when he played Mozart 21 with the Three Spires Singers a few years ago he showed that enviable quality of being unencumbered by all of that thought when in the moment of performance – we can’t wait to hear his stylish and beautiful playing again on 2nd July.

Music and a message of hope

Some words from the teacher

The reason for doing this project was to continue the success of the Cop 26 project - we had lots of interest from Bangladesh for that, so they became the next country to learn about and reach out to. The floods in Bahia had just happened at the time we decided to do the project and obviously tied in with samba teaching, so that became the other focus country. We called it Messages of Hope because it was intended as a message of solidarity, child to child.

We did the art as specific lessons to tie in with the theme. We tried to take a multi media approach to learning about the countries involved. We even made lemon tea at Windmill (for the Bangladesh project).

We did have a really great time making the film and children in both schools always ask me if we are going to do more! I have also had a number of students ask to sign up for strings / drumming lessons.
