How to leave a gift
If you already have a will, or if you are planning on writing your will, leaving a gift to charity is simple. As a will is a legal document, it’s always best to get legal advice from a solicitor to make sure your wishes are properly reflected in your will.
If you don’t have a will yet, you can talk to your solicitor about making a new will and include the suggested wording below. If you already have a will you can make this simple change leaving a gift to charity by way of a codicil. Your solicitor will know how to do this so do talk to them about it.
No inheritance tax
Any gift in your will to a UK charity (like CMST) is exempt from inheritance tax. This means that your family won’t have to pay any tax on the amount you leave to CMST - a small thoughtful benefit for them alongside the good you will be doing by leaving the legacy.

However much you can give, whether big or small, every penny can make a difference. So from all at CMST, thank you.
Using your legacy for a specific purpose
Most people choose to leave a legacy to CMST for its general charitable purposes allowing us to use the money where it is needed most.
If you would like to give the money for a particular event or cause that we are involved with, then of course we would be more than happy to follow your wishes. Simply include this purpose in the suggested wording below and get your solicitor to make sure it is legally effective and we will use your legacy only for that purpose.
Suggested wording
For a gift of a specific sum we suggest your solicitor uses the following wording:
“I give the sum of £_____ to Cornwall Music Service Trust (also known as CMST), a charity registered in England and Wales with charity number 1159622 of Truro School, Trennick Lane, Cornwall TR1 1TH, for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of its treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.”
For a gift of the remainder of your estate after taking care of your family and friends, we suggest your solicitor uses the following wording:
“After payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the whole/____% of my estate not otherwise disposed of in this Will to Cornwall Music Service Trust (also known as CMST), a charity registered in England and Wales with charity number 1159622 of Truro School, Trennick Lane, Cornwall TR1 1TH, for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of its treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.”
If you decide to give 10% or more of your estate to charity this may have some tax advantages. You should consult a solicitor who will be able to advise you if this is something you think you might want to do.
