Learning from the Open School Orchestra pilot

Learning from the Open School Orchestra pilot

As part of the year-long Open School Orchestra (OSO) project for students with disabilities, CMST ran a pilot bringing GCSE music students to work alongside the OSO in some creative workshops. This film discusses what we've learned from the pilot, how this could feed into designing future projects, and what further benefits there could be from shared music-making between mainstream students and ARB units for students with special educational needs or disabilities.

This project is run by Cornwall Music Service Trust, with funding from Cornwall Music Education Hub, and Youth Music. You can find out more about Open School Orchestras at:

Creative Ensembles - an inclusive progression route

Creative Ensembles - an inclusive progression route

In our Open School Orchestra project for students with disabilities, it became apparent that some had a lot of ability and interest in music, and would enjoy developing their skills further outside of school. This film discusses how creative ensembles might address this need, provide inclusive progression routes, and bridge the gap between Open School Orchestras and the more advanced regional and national open youth orchestras.

Benefits of Open School Orchestra collaboration

Benefits of Open School Orchestra collaboration

A discussion around Open School Orchestras (OSOs) collaborating with mainstream students. As part of our OSO project for children with disabilities, we ran a small pilot bringing the OSO and a group of Year 10 GCSE students together at Richard Lander School, to create and perform music with Patrick Bailey. This film explores some of the benefits, musically and socially, of this way of approaching musical inclusion.

This project is run by Cornwall Music Service Trust, with funding from Cornwall Music Education Hub, and Youth Music. You can find out more about Open School Orchestras at:

Open School Orchestra workshop

Open School Orchestra workshop

Cornwall Music Service Trust has been running the Open School Orchestra project in Cornwall since 2016. Young musicians with special educational needs or disabilities (SEN/D) from Pencalenick and Richard Lander School have formed open school orchestras, and been on an amazing journey - musically, socially, and personally.

At the end of the first year, Richard Lander School helped us explore what truly inclusive music is about. Patrick Bailey led workshops with Year 10 GCSE students and SEN/D students from the Ark to create a piece of music, finishing with this performance. CMST hopes to build on this work as it brings Open School Orchestras to new schools in 2017-18.

This project was made possible with funding from Cornwall Music Education Hub, and Youth Music. You can find out more about Open School Orchestras at:

Cornwall Music Service Trust Pupil of the Month - June 2017

Cornwall Music Service Trust Pupil of the Month - June 2017

Congratulations go to Amy Pearton who has been awarded the CMST Pupil of The Month award for June, 2017.

Amy is an outstanding musician and is a pupil at Torpoint Community College. Louise Gallie (CMST Woodwind Teacher) has been teaching Amy for several months and is delighted with her rate of progression and commitment to her music making. Amy is about to take her Grade 5 exams in Theory, Piano and Clarinet and it is on the latter instrument that Amy has demonstrated some exceptional commitment.

Louise commented “Amy's ambition is to join the Royal Marines Band Service. Due to my own experiences, I have been able to make suggestions regarding what she can do to gain experience to support her ambitions and one of these was to join an ensemble. Due to the location in which we live, Plymouth was an easier option to look for options and subsequently, Amy is now 2nd/1st Clarinet with Plymouth Youth Concert Band, under the direction of Mr Barrie Mills (ex director of music, Royal Marines). Such is the location of the local area, Amy has to travel, without complaint and alone, by bus for 40 minutes to get to rehearsals and a 50 minute journey home: this demonstrates her level of commitment.  Playing in an ensemble has increased Amy's musical ability and confidence and she has become more of a well-rounded musician and valued member of the band, often sitting on 1st clarinet, receiving praise on regular occasions from Mr Mills. I’ve no doubt that Amy will further her experience in ensemble playing in the coming months.”

Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, said “This month we had exceptionally high levels of nominations for the award however, Amy’s commitment to her music making and in particular the levels of commitment demonstrated in attending her ensemble, meant that Amy just pipped the rest of the cohort to receive this month's award. Well done Amy!”

FROM THE CHAIRMAN.

I am sure that you are all looking forward to the summer season ahead, following for what many of you has been a very busy few months preparing for the area and Bugle contest.

Looking back to our Easter Course, although the Band was low in numbers, the playing was still   up to the usual standard. Paul Holland who led the course commented the Band should be proud of their achievements, and Paul Richards our guest soprano cornet soloist wowed the crowds with his tremendous playing.

The rehearsals for the Christmas course commence in September. The course will be led by Dr. Stephen Cobb the Bandmaster of The International Staff Band of the Salvation Army His son Philip who is Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra will be our soloist. They were first with us in 2007 when it was a very enjoyable and successful course.

We will be auditioning for new players shortly, so please encourage your friends, and spread the word. They will be given a warm welcome and I am sure they would enjoy being part of our great Band and benefit from it.

I hope you all enjoy your summer with your parent Bands and I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Brian Minear.

CAN YOU HELP ?

The Trustees have always welcomed and appreciated the support given by Parents and Supporters in assisting with the successful running of the Band over the years. Following the reorganisation of tasks during last season, we have identified two particular areas where we would welcome voluntary assistance from September. Existing Trustees will of course be available to provide support for anyone undertaking these tasks.

Transport Co-ordinator. This involves arranging and assisting in the provision of transport for the collection and delivery of music stands, banners and other gear from our store at Truro College to Truro High School for Girls prior to and after each Course, as well as the transfer and return of percussion requirements from local Bands who kindly loan their equipment for the Courses. At present we hire vans, but would welcome help from someone with suitable transport, running costs would be covered. Alternatively a volunteer without transport would be welcome, but would also have to arrange the booking of transport from a convenient local company.

Entertainment Organiser. During each Course we endeavour to arrange social events for the various ages of musicians in the Band. These can include visits to the Cinema or Bowling Alley, films and games at the School. We would welcome assistance in initiating,               co-ordinating and overseeing these and other activities, in conjunction with the Band Representatives.

For further details of how you can help with these tasks and to volunteer please contact Robert Kitchen, mail@rgckitchen.eclipse.co.uk

MAJOR SUCCESSES FOR FORMER CYBB MUSICIAN.

The outstanding winning performance at this year’s National Youth Championships of Great Britain by Wardle Academy Youth Band was of our past member Daniel Hall's composition, Smoke Sketches, commissioned for the Championships. Smoke Sketches is an 8 minute work that takes its inspiration from the art of divination — interpreting visions and images from the smoke of an open fire, and was used as the set-test in the Intermediate Section.

The three movement work, comprising sections, 'Into the Blaze', 'A Lonesome Ember' and 'Spark of Light', was written specifically for the event, but is also already being seen as one that could easily be used at Fourth Section level with its energetic jazz and blues character. The other piece played by Wardle in their programme was Penlee, by another former CYBB member, Simon Dobson. In congratulating all 11 bands at the contest, Daniel added a special mention for Wardle's performance, saying: "Never have I ever been so inspired by a youth ensemble's performance; the amount of detail and attention to character was immense; thank you all so much!"

On the 25th May Daniel heard the first performance in Cardiff of his new Euphonium Concerto, inspired by the story of Pinocchio, performed by his friend Matthew Rowe, another CYBB past member. The 18 minute work for euphonium with piano accompaniment was written for Matthew to form part of his final Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama degree recital. Daniel commented, "I wrote it for Matthew as he's such a wonderful player — both with Tongwynlais Band and with the Indigo Brass Quartet who recently won the Philip Jones Ensemble Competition at RWCMD. We are also great friends, so I knew he would enjoy the work."

More recently Daniel’s latest commission was given a world premiere at the recent West of England Bandsman's Festival in Bugle on June 17th. The work, entitled, 'Kodema — Echoes of the Mountain' was written for St. Austell Youth Band, and renewed a special link, as his love for brass bands was nurtured by the band as a youngster before he left Bugle where he lived, to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. Kodama is an eight minute test or concert piece designed for Fourth Section level, and was commissioned by Anna Minear and St. Austell Youth Band and is dedicated to Anna's father, Peter.

Conductor, Anna Minear was delighted to give the world premiere in the composer's home town contest, and said "It's fantastic to commission a new work by such a talented young composer like Daniel, especially since he is a past member of the band. I remember giving him his first ever music lesson in primary school age 10 and to see how's he's progressed is truly inspirational for the other youngsters following in his footsteps with us”.

In making his name as a major brass band composer Daniel is following in the footsteps of other past CYBB musicians such Christopher Bond and Simon Dobson, whose popular work Penlee, commissioned by the CYBB, was the B Grade test piece in this year’s Australian National Championships.

STEPHEN SYKES.

Thanks from Jayne joy to everyone who donated to the retiring collection at the Cornwall Youth Brass Band Easter concert on Monday 17th April 2017 for Stephen Sykes. “A total of £257.00 was raised which I've already transferred into the 'Save Stephen' fund on behalf of the Band”.

Jayne Joy.

LOOKING AHEAD.

For the Christmas Course this year we are delighted to welcome back Dr Stephen Cobb, Band master of The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army. Stephen was last with us in 2007, when he was accompanied by his son Philip, as Guest Soloist. We are hopeful that Philip, now Principal Trumpet of The London Symphony Orchestra, will be able to join us as well, his orchestral duties permitting.

DATES for the new CYBB Season are,

Rehearsals at Truro College, Sunday’s 24th September, 22nd October, 26th November,           7th January, 4th February, 18th March.

We are sorry that James Gore has stepped down as a Trustee, and thank him for his support and dedication over many years.

FRIENDS OF THE CORNWALL YOUTH BRASS BAND.

We are always pleased to welcome new Friends of the Band, even though everyone connected to the Band is a Volunteer, we still need to ensure a regular income to continue our work for your benefit. Please ask Relatives or anyone you know to consider helping us in this way. Our formal details about the Scheme are below.

Why not become a Friend of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, which is a self-funding charity. 100% of every £1 you donate will help our young musicians. All our trustees and local tutors give their time to the band entirely without charge.

It is an expensive business running two four-day residential courses for the band, directed by eminent conductors, one at Christmas and one at Easter, to say nothing of the cost of music, percussion instruments and other essentials. We are, therefore, always grateful for donations to help us provide the best possible and most stimulating musical experiences we can for our young musicians.

Ways in which you can be a Friend

  • Set up a standing order
  • Make a one-off donation
  • Make a gift aid declaration, if you are a UK taxpayer, and enable us to claim 25p from the government for every £1 you donate at no cost to you.

As a Friend, you will be entitled to receive our email Winter and Summer Newsletters to keep you up to date with news about the band and its activities. Your donation will be acknowledged in our Concert Programmes. “

North Cornwall Next Steps

North Cornwall Next Steps

Cornwall Music Education Hub funded Next Steps sessions for Wind and Brass players in the Bude area and in the Wadebridge area for the summer term.

We have been delighted that at each of the venues we have ensembles of approximately fifteen wind and brass players aiming to encourage the young people to develop their musical skills through ensemble playing. At both centres we have been working on two pieces, 'Bare Necessities' and 'I've Got My Eye On You', and we are excited to announce that on Monday 10th July 7pm at Wadebridge School, the players from both areas will come together and form a wind ensemble of around 30 players to perform their pieces as part of the secondary school concert. The feedback from many parents has been that their children have really enjoyed performing and learning in mixed ensembles and instrumental teachers have also noticed and commented on improvements in pupils who have been attending the Next Step sessions. We hope you enjoy the short clip from a rehearsal in Marhamchurch.

Crowd-funding Ukulele Project

Crowd-funding Ukulele Project

Cornwall Music Service Trust mounted a successful crowd-funding campaign which enabled the establishment of the service in 2015. We are happy to share details of another crowd-funding project which you may like to support.

"The 'You Can Ukulele!' project aims to teach young parents who lack access to music how to play the ukulele so that they can provide their children with inspiring musical play at home. Music is an incredible tool for improving child development and parent/child attachment and the ukulele is a versatile and accessible instrument to learn. This project will be facilitated by WILD Young Parents Project , a registered charity in Cornwall."
