Congratulations go to Monty Manning who has been awarded the CMST Pupil of The Month Award for February 2019.
Monty’s teacher, Anna Minear, tells us “Monty had been learning the trumpet up until October last year but was really struggling to get any higher than the note E. I therefore suggested to Monty's mum that he tried a bigger instrument and we found him a baritone. The instrument is almost as big as Monty, but he gave it a go and we discovered he could suddenly pitch higher notes!”
Monty has been working really hard since then, and in January Anna suggested they work towards a Music Medal. “The home practice rate has certainly increased even more and the desire to earn a medal has really made Monty determined to work as hard as possible and he is enjoying his playing. Last week we worked on the skills options of the medal and Monty sailed through” Anna proudly tells us.
Anna tells us she nominated Monty for pupil of the month because despite finding things difficult he has never given up and he now arrives at his lesson with a huge smile, excited to tell Anna about what he has practiced and he still manages to helps others in his group!
Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, commented “This is a great example of perseverance. Monty, with the help and support of Anna, persevered through a challenging time in his music learning. It is always the easy option to give up when things seem hard. By changing his instrument, Monty has found a new love for his music making.
Fantastic Monty, well done and keep up the great work.”
The weekend is open to adults and students - some teachers might come away with some new ideas for teaching recorder.....good opportunity for meeting other recorder players!
ALL students are invited - whatever their level - there are playing workshops, art and music workshops, exploring different types of recorders etc.
BLOCK 4 recorder quartet are an award winning ensemble who travel the world - they are running some of the workshops and performing a concert on the Saturday evening (tickets available on the door). One of the members of BLOCK4 comes from Cornwall - went to Cusgarne Primary and Richard Lander School, played flute in Carrick Winds and learnt recorder with Sarah Whomersley.

NYFE are searching nationwide for talented young musicians (aged 14-18) to take part in their FREE Sampler Day workshops! The FREE Sampler Days, led by Sam Patridge (Artistic Director from summer 2019), Rob Harbron and Miranda Rutter, offer a positive and welcoming atmosphere for young musicians to take part in creative folk music workshops. All playing and learning will be done by ear. Each Sampler Day will be an inspiring introduction to the Ensemble. All Young musicians are welcome to take part and if they want to they can audition for the fourth cohort of the Ensemble.

MusicNet East Changing Tunes based at Hertfordshire Music Service, is delighted to announce that two new delivery partners have been selected via a competitive bid process to join the project. Cornwall Music Service Trust and Southampton Music Service will join Essex Music Service, Norfolk Music Service and Cambridgeshire Music to run action research project looking at musical inclusion within music services. Each scheme of work contributes to the Changing Tunes research looking at how music services can embed inclusion in their offer.
Michael Davidson, project lead in Hertfordshire said ‘We are pleased that our new partners demonstrate the same openness and desire to learn that foster across this project. We want to know the impact on the young people but also on the music service staff that get involved. Perhaps most importantly, we want to know how inclusion work can be sustained long term through the core and extension roles which each music education hub delivers.’
The two new partners are focused on developing work with children in care and those with mental health challenges. Other partners are working with young people at risk of exclusion in school and beyond.
Changing Tunes is funded by Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery via Arts Council England, as part of Youth Music’s strategic work which aims towards and musically inclusive England.
WHAT IS MUSICNET EAST CHANGING TUNES?
MusicNet East Changing Tunes is an Action Research project funded by Youth Music's Strategic Fund C
The project will aim to answer the question:
What is the benefit to music services as hub lead organisations of embedding inclusion into their offer?
What are the challenges they face in doing this?
MusicNet East is based at Hertfordshire Music Service and has held several strategic grants from Youth Music over the last 5 years. Essex Music Service and Cambridgeshire Music have also been partners in MusicNet East since 2015. Norfolk Music Service has recently joined as a phase 1 partner.

Truro Library was buzzing with excitement for the Learn to Play Day on Saturday March 23rd where Cornwall Music Service Trust focused their event on the instruments of the String Family. The double bass proved to go down a storm with a number children wanting to give this instrument a go.
From the moment the library opens its doors we had a constant stream of people from age 3 to 63 interested to see what was going on in the normally quiet venue. A very successful event indeed and our thanks go to Crea and the staff at Truro Library.

Our team of Healthy Workplace Champions, Christine Judge, Janet Elston and Karen Frost proudly received the GOLD Award at the Healthy Workplace Conference in Wadebridge on March 18th. This is an NHS programme that encourages good health in the workplace. Not just physical health, but mental health and well-being. You need good health to work, and work can give good health. So it matters to employers and employees to invest in Workplace Health. The programme has three levels of achievement, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Karen Frost says ...“We are thrilled to have received the GOLD Award today, and lovely to be recognised for all that we do for our staff, the information we share and the social activities we arrange”.

Violinist Krysia Osostowicz and her experienced Dante colleague Richard Jenkinson (cello), bring their innovative and exciting approach to the special Benslow Music Group Quartet concept, where tutors sit and play within the group, approaching everything as large-scale chamber music. Individual responsibility and initiative are encouraged, as is discussion on musical issues and techniques. Krysia and Richard will offer their personal insight into rehearsal tips and techniques. The workshop is a fantastic way to observe and participate in a professional rehearsal environment.
