This term, the guitar team ran a Christmas tune competition. There were 3 categories where students of different levels were given the challenge to play one of three set pieces. Out of all the entries, each guitar teacher was asked to submit what they felt was the best performance from their schools, and then from that we chose an overall winner for each category.
Jasmine won the level 3 category for her performance of "God rest ye Merry Gentlemen" on the classical guitar. She's currently preparing to take her Grade 5 exam.
Cornwall Music Service Trust Pupil Of The Month Award (POTMA) - July, September and October 2018 Winners
Normally we would announce individual awards on a monthly basis but the competition has been so fierce that it has taken our panel a little while to decide on the previous 3 months awards. Excitingly, we have 3 announcements to make in this update on winners of POTMA for the past 3 months (August no award) and what a deserving trio of young musicians they are!
July 2018 - Henry Ellis
Henry started his cornet playing at a very young age, being in the infants at his school. His teacher Claire Churcher tells us “Henry is a very enthusiastic learner, always really keen to show me his new favourite thing to play!”
Claire says “Henry took and passed his grade 1 whist in year 2 and only very recently took his grade 2 exam which I am sure he will pass with flying colours.”
Henry is a member of the St Keverne Youth band and within his first few weeks of joining he took part in the SWBBA championships at Torquay in which the Youth Band won their section.
September 2018 - Lucy Jadav
Teacher Jane Whatley is delighted to tell us all about her winner, Lucy.
“Lucy impressed me so much over the summer term, preparing for the end-of-term music concert, in which she played two pieces as part of a band. She played the lead part for Havana and a flute duet for All of Me.”
Jane continued, saying “Lucy works tirelessly each week at home and is completely focused and engaged during lesson time. She picks up new concepts really quickly and makes rapid progress due to her commitment and dedication to practise”
October 2018 - Jenna Cowling
Teacher Amanda Rice is delighted to be able to present her winner, Jenna Cowling.
“Jenna has been learning the bassoon since February 2018 and has made amazing progress. She’s passed her Bronze Music Medal with excellence before the summer. She is also a member of the next steps ensemble which she attends on a weekly basis and is developing a good ear for ensemble playing.”
Amanda also said, “Her commitment this term to both lessons and next steps has been brilliant and she is developing into a capable young musician.”
Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, commented “This trio of musicians typically demonstrates that there can be great achievement at the early stages of development. It is just as important to recognise and applaud this with musicians just embarking on their musical careers as it is with our more advanced instrumentalists. My sincere thanks goes to the staff who are so inspiring to these pupils as their enthusiasm and encouragement has a huge impact on their learning.”
