The South West’s biggest Early Years Expressive Arts Conference, bringing together EY practitioners, artists, music leaders, settings, regional hubs, funders, researchers and strategic partners.

Small Steps: Big Noise is a one-day conference showcasing creativity in practice for 0-5s across the South West, including prominent keynote speakers, vibrant debate led by Early Years experts, engaging practical workshops and a performance from a professional Early Years theatre company.

Dr Susan Young: The BIG Noise in Small Steps!

Take Art is delighted to welcome academically respected Early Years Arts, Music and Education expert Dr. Susan Young, author of ‘Music with the Under Fours’ and ‘Music 3-5’ to deliver the Keynote speech to open Small Steps Big Noise, the South West’s biggest and brightest Early Years Conference. Susan is one of the UKs leading advocates for creative arts education, with particular reference to early childhood music.

In her keynote, she will challenge and enthuse everyone involved in Early Years creative practice and education, speaking of the vital imperative we all share to promote and articulate high quality inclusive practice.

She has decades of experience in academia, recently retired as senior lecturer from Exeter University and is an honorary research fellow with Roehampton University. Susan is the current chair of MERYC-England and is still involved in Early Childhood Music as a researcher and consultant. She is Course Director of the new national Certificate for Music Educators: Early Childhood. Originally having trained as a pianist at the Royal College of Music, she spent her early career teaching music in secondary, primary and pre-school settings before achieving a PhD in Early Childhood Music from the University of Surrey.

Rhona Matheson

Rhona Matheson is Chief Executive of Starcatchers, Scotland’s National Arts and Early Years organisation. They specialise in creating performances and exploring creative activity for babies, toddlers and young children aged 0-5 and the adults who care for them. Rhona began working with Starcatchers on the pilot project in 2006 and since then has been on an amazing journey with thousands of babies, toddlers, parents, carers, educators, artists and project partners.

She is an inspirational speaker who believes passionately in the transformational power of the arts to inspire Scotland’s youngest children and the people who care for them through creativity, performances and engagement projects. “10 years ago, people questioned what the point of theatre and creativity for babies was, in 2017, people question why there isn’t more.”

In this Keynote, she’ll help support us in our call to arms to make this work irrefutable.

Places still available for Inaugural Cornwall Youth Jazz Festival

Cornwall Music Service Trust, in collaboration with Truro College and Cornwall Music Education Hub, is proud to present the inaugural Cornwall Youth Jazz Festival 2017. We will be joined by students from Leeds College of Music studying on the Jazz Degree course and will deliver a weekend of workshops, master classes and performances. Letters - that have have already been sent out to schools - is also available to download here along with a consent form

The Gala Concert on Saturday 25th November starts at 7:00 pm and entry is £5 / £2:50 for under 16's.

Cornwall Music Service Trust Pupil Of The Month - October 2017 Winner

Congratulations go to Holly Crompton who has been awarded CMST Pupil of The Month award for October, 2017.

Holly is a keen Violinist who is taught by Karen Frost (String Teacher and Team Manager for Strings within CMST) and sister to Harry who was the first ever recipient of the CMST Pupil of the Month award. Sounds like a musical family!

Mrs Frost said “Holly is a keen and motivated pupil, with an enthusiastic and inquisitive approach”.

Mrs Frost continued to say “Holly has developed her performance skills over the last year despite having quite a reserved personality and is playing with much more confidence and belief”.

Furthermore Mrs Frost commented that Holly is “always diligent with her practice, she is a promising and deserving student for the October CMST Pupil of the Month award”.

Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, said “It is lovely to see that through the hard work of Karen Frost, a family has had the opportunity to be immersed in music making. Although at times I am sure there is healthy competition between the two siblings it allows a family to be brought closer together through their love of music-making. I am delighted for Holly and well done to the Crompton family!”

Children In Need Funds Raised

Members of Restormal Junior String Orchestra held a rehearsal in fancy dress to raise money for the BBC Children in Need appeal. The event raised a total of £35.63 for the charity and, as you can see from the photos, Pudsey had a great time!

An unexpected vacancy has arisen for a new boy Chorister to join the celebrated choir at Truro Cathedral. They are looking for a talented singer, currently in Year 4, to join the choir in the near future. Auditions are to be held in late November to fill the position.

As well as unparalleled musical opportunities, all new Choristers attend Truro Prep School – rated ‘excellent’ by inspectors this year, the highest grade possible. Successful applicants receive a generous scholarship towards the cost of education fees. Additional means-tested support is also available with the aim that selection of Choristers is based purely on ability.
