Cornwall Music Service Trust Pupil Of The Month - October 2017 Winner

Congratulations go to Holly Crompton who has been awarded CMST Pupil of The Month award for October, 2017.

Holly is a keen Violinist who is taught by Karen Frost (String Teacher and Team Manager for Strings within CMST) and sister to Harry who was the first ever recipient of the CMST Pupil of the Month award. Sounds like a musical family!

Mrs Frost said “Holly is a keen and motivated pupil, with an enthusiastic and inquisitive approach”.

Mrs Frost continued to say “Holly has developed her performance skills over the last year despite having quite a reserved personality and is playing with much more confidence and belief”.

Furthermore Mrs Frost commented that Holly is “always diligent with her practice, she is a promising and deserving student for the October CMST Pupil of the Month award”.

Gareth Churcher, Head of Service for CMST, said “It is lovely to see that through the hard work of Karen Frost, a family has had the opportunity to be immersed in music making. Although at times I am sure there is healthy competition between the two siblings it allows a family to be brought closer together through their love of music-making. I am delighted for Holly and well done to the Crompton family!”

Children In Need Funds Raised

Members of Restormal Junior String Orchestra held a rehearsal in fancy dress to raise money for the BBC Children in Need appeal. The event raised a total of £35.63 for the charity and, as you can see from the photos, Pudsey had a great time!

An unexpected vacancy has arisen for a new boy Chorister to join the celebrated choir at Truro Cathedral. They are looking for a talented singer, currently in Year 4, to join the choir in the near future. Auditions are to be held in late November to fill the position.

As well as unparalleled musical opportunities, all new Choristers attend Truro Prep School – rated ‘excellent’ by inspectors this year, the highest grade possible. Successful applicants receive a generous scholarship towards the cost of education fees. Additional means-tested support is also available with the aim that selection of Choristers is based purely on ability.

Radford Charitable Trust free instrument loan scheme

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you all about the Radford Charitable Trust and its free instrument loan scheme.  Instruments can be leant to students resident in Cornwall (or for those in Higher Education, who have lived in Cornwall till the age of 18 years).  Instruments are loaned free of charge for up to three years, and are usually insured worldwide.  To enquire, please visit our website www.radfordtrust.org (where you will also find information about the Trust’s grant scheme).

At the moment, we have 45 instruments out on loan with another 4 awaiting issue after attention by relevant repairers.

For your information, instruments currently available are:

·         Violins – 3/4, 7/8, 4/4 sizes

·         Viola – 16” back Stentor

·         Cello – ¾ size only

·         Flutes – student level instruments (Yamaha 211 or equivalent)

·         Clarinets in B Flat – student level instruments, Buffet E13, Peter Eaton Elite (which may be issued to an existing borrower if no other applications are forthcoming)

·         Clarinet in A – Edgeware model (pre E13)

·         Trumpets in B Flat – student level instruments 

·         French Horn – Boosey & Hawkes GDR full double

·         Baritone Horn – Yamaha 201

·         Euphonium – B&S Sonora 3 valve

·         Tenor Trombone – Yamaha model with Trigger

For those teachers whose students have applied, those instruments are not counted as in stock.   Also, I have one 4/4 Cello and one Cor Anglais which are being held for a couple of weeks in anticipation of a full application. 

Instruments are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.  If there is a suitable instrument available, it will be checked over by a repairer and then issued.

CMST has its first Patron!

As Cornwall Music Service Trust approaches the end of its third year of existence we are delighted to announce that Charles Hazelwood has agreed to be our first Patron.

Charles Hazlewood, British conductor, is a passionate advocate for a wider audience for orchestral music. After winning the European Broadcasting Union conducting competition in his 20’s, he has enjoyed a global and pioneering career conducting some of the world’s greatest orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony, Gothenburg & Malmö Symphonies, Copenhagen Philharmonic, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam and the Philharmonia (London). Hazlewood is known for breaking new ground. By re-inventing the presentation of orchestral music and by collaborating with many ‘stars’ from across the genres of music Hazlewood has sought to embed the ‘magical instrument of the orchestra’ in 21st century music scene; but always with the same goal: to expose the deep, always-modern joy of orchestral music to a new audience. Hazlewood has authored, presented and conducted multiple television films on music for the BBC and Channel Four and won Sony Awards for his shows on Radio 2 and 3. Hazlewood has conducted over 100 world premieres of new scores by contemporary composers, and worked with contemporary musicians as diverse as Wyclef Jean, Professor Green, Goldie, Nigel Kennedy and Steve Reich. Inaugural Cornwall Youth Jazz Festival

Cornwall Music Service Trust, in collaboration with Truro College and Cornwall Music Education Hub, is proud to present the inaugural Cornwall Youth Jazz Festival 2017. We will be joined by students from Leeds College of Music studying on the Jazz Degree course and will deliver a weekend of workshops, master classes and performances. Letters have already been sent out to schools - it is also available to download here along with a consent form
