A giant of the flamenco guitar tradition
— The Times

Voted one of the top three flamenco guitarists in the world, Juan Martin has toured internationally, playing concerts from Shanghai and Melbourne to New York. Critics have compared his compositional talent to that of Albéniz, Turina and Tárrega. The guitarist and composer played for Picasso’s 90th birthday celebrations, and his original book on learning the guitar is referred to as ‘The Bible’ of flamenco guitar.

Join us for an evening of exquisite and highly sophisticated contemporary music at St Endellion.

Penzance Orchestra's Scandinavian Adventure

Penzance Orchestra's Scandinavian Adventure

Penzance Orchestra’s Scandinavian Adventure

On Saturday November 12th, Penzance Orchestral Society will take its audience on a whistle-stop tour of Scandinavia through the power of music.

The concert, which starts at 3pm, features the welcome return of Preston Yeo as solo violin to perform Sibelius’ Violin Concerto - the only concerto he ever wrote. Preston has recently taken up a post as Professor in the Royal Academy of Music’s Junior Department.

The family-friendly matinee starts off with Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No 3: Beethoven took not one but four attempts at writing an overture for his opera Fidelio. Number 3 was deemed too strong for the opera’s opening scenes but is a beautiful piece of music in its own right which summarises the opera, which tells the story of how Leonore, in guise of a prison guard named Fidelio, rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison.

The programme concludes with Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s magnificent Symphony Number 1 - which was written when the composer was 27.

Penzance Orchestral Society would be delighted if you would join them for their musical adventure on Saturday November 12th at 3pm in St John’s Hall, Penzance. Tickets are now available online from the Minack Theatre box office priced £10 and may also be purchased on the door. Free admission for children under 16 accompanied by an adult.

Be a Girl Chorister at Truro Cathedral

Be a Girl Chorister at Truro Cathedral

Truro Cathedral are putting on an exciting opportunity for girl Choristers in 2023, find out more below.

Dear CMST Musicians and Parents,

Truro Cathedral and Truro School are delighted to extend an invitation to their ‘Be a Girl Chorister for a Day’ event, on Tuesday 15 November, to all girls in Years 7 and 8 who like singing, and especially those who may be interested in applying for a chorister scholarship.

The ‘Be a Girl Chorister for a Day’ event gives girls the chance to experience life as a chorister, starting with their morning rehearsal and then a normal school day, ending with the opportunity to sing Evensong with Truro Cathedral Choir. All of Truro Cathedral’s choristers are educated at Truro School. They each receive 25% scholarships and are eligible for means-tested additional support for their five years in Truro Cathedral Choir (ending as they leave Upper Sixth). Girls apply to be choristers when they are in Year 8, in order to begin as they enter Year 9. More information about chorister scholarships can be found here: https://www.truroschool.com/admissions/girl-chorister-scholarships/

Previous ‘Be a Girl Chorister for a Day’ events have inspired many to apply over the years, and for others it is just a great day of singing at a very high level with a wonderful group of musicians.

Chris Gray, Director of Music at Truro Cathedral: “What the choristers achieve on a daily basis is extraordinary. There are few areas of life in which young people still at school can achieve professional standards, but that is exactly what our choristers do. Working as part of a close team, they bring a level of focus and passion to their singing that is constantly inspiring. Being a chorister can be a life-changing and life-enhancing experience.”

If you would like your daughter to take part in the ‘Be A Chorister For A Day’, please complete the registration form here: BACFAD - Sign Up Form or to find out more, please contact admissions@truroschool.com

With best wishes

Bal Maiden Auditions

Bal Maiden Auditions

The Bal Maiden Musical project will be premiering on the 16th to 18th November (NEXT YEAR!) 2023 at the Princess Pavilions in Falmouth.

They will be presenting a series of auditions this November/December at the Princess Pavilion on Saturday 12th, 26th November and 3rd December. They will be quite relaxed and we would like them to be more like workshops than formal auditions to be as inclusive as possible and invite as many potential actors and performers as possible.
