The Three Spires Singers Sea Symphony at Truro Cathedral

The Three Spires Singers Sea Symphony at Truro Cathedral

Please read about the next concert, below. Tickets for people aged 25 and under are only £1 to encourage lots of young people to come and enjoy the experience!

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ fabulous Sea Symphony (1910) is the centre-piece of Three Spires Singers’ first autumn concert this year. Performance requires a large orchestra, soloists and choir – the latter forming an intrinsic part of the whole work. Using words from the visionary American poet Walt Whitman, Vaughan Williams vividly paints all the moods of the sea and Whitman’s awe and exhilaration. It’s colourful, exciting and moving by turns.

Conductor Christopher Gray describes it as "music that encapsulates vividly all the moods of the sea, but also Whitman’s metaphors: Whitman presents the sea as something awesome and deeply spiritual that is a great leveller, uniting us all in various ways, but in a world where things are not always plain sailing."

The programme also includes two works composed at the very end of the nineteenth century: Sibelius’s Finlandia is a stirring tribute to his beloved homeland; in Elgar’s Sea Pictures for mezzo soprano and orchestra listen out for the opening poem by Roden Noel which evokes Kynance Cove!

Shostakovich String Quartet No.8

Shostakovich String Quartet No.8

IMS Prussia Cove are celebrating their 50th anniversary this September and as part of the celebrations they are presenting an afternoon of string orchestra playing which is open to all string players in Cornwall.

Shostakovich’s 8th Quartet has always fascinated me – it’s a piece with little hope and plenty of musical discord yet caries enormous beauty and touches us deeply. On Saturday 24th September a quartet from IMS (of which I am privileged to be a part and led by Lesley Hatfield who is an enormously inspiring musician and wonderful violinist) will be leading a rehearsal session on this piece. Please come and join us! We want to make a large string orchestra with players from all over the county to explore and rehearse this piece together, ending with a run through for our own enjoyment.

Follow the link on the flyer to sign up – and it’s FREE!

Hoping to see you on September 24th,

Best wishes,

Tim Boulton

Conductor

The Firebird

The Firebird

Based on a poem by Michael Rosen, The Firebird is a new puppet opera composed by Noah Mosley and co-produced by English Touring Opera and Little Angel Theatre.

Ivan is a young and foolish Prince who thinks only of himself. He captures the Firebird, only to set her free when he feels a sadness in his heart. She gives him a feather that will help him if he needs it… Delve into the enchanted castle where Ivan will meet a free-spirited Princess and a menacing and cold-hearted King!

The Firebird brings together English Touring Opera’s singers and instrumentalists with the expert puppeteers of the Little Angel Theatre to create an atmospheric fun, comic, and enthralling online tale for children. The film is directed by Valentina Ceschi and designed by Little Angel Theatre’s Ellie Mills.

Trigg SeaView Farm Shop Performance

Trigg SeaView Farm Shop Performance

Last month the Triggshire Wind Orchestra performed at an exciting new venue: Sea View Farm shop, St Teath. The owner had built a large outdoor stage from straw bales which was situated on the cliffs with dramatic views, so we called it ‘Trigg Glastonbury’. The whole concert had a happy feel and it finished what has been a fabulous year for Trigg.

CMST SuperStrings

CMST SuperStrings

What a fabulous afternoon the SuperStrings and Friends had in Truro Methodist Church on Sunday July 10th. This was our third and biggest adventure yet, including for the first time woodwind, brass and percussion players, an idea that came from Gareth Churcher (CMST Head of Service) to create a supersized orchestra for our younger players.
— Karen Frost

Our programme began with the full orchestra playing three short Scottish Dances by Peter Martin. Conducted by Gareth Churcher these were perfectly suited to this combination and level of players, giving everyone a moment to shine. Next came three string orchestra only pieces, 'Noble Maiden Fair' from the disney film Brave especially arranged for us by Stuart MacQaurrie. Sting's beautiful ballad 'Fields of Gold' came next and then a lively foot tapping sea shanty called 'The Wellerman'.

To round off our short concert the whole orchestra came back together to play David Stone's arrangement of Mussorgsky's 'The Great Gate of Kiev' which brought down the house. How can you fail to be excited by this music when the final few bars involve huge, loud sounds, drums, organ and every instrument playing and giving their best effort.

There is no shortage of reasons why playing in an ensemble benefits children. It allows young people to create something magical and preparing for a concert provides constant motivation to practice and improve over a number of weeks.

The finished performance may look easy, but it’s challenging to collaborate with many other players to make one piece of music sound whole, in tune, and expressive. Every player must learn to communicate and work as a team to deliver one musical idea. Therefore, an orchestral musician learns to listen, harmonise and follow direction. Something the young people in SuperStrings & Friends are learning to do very successfully at a very early age.
— Karen Frost
The Superstrings met for their summer term rehearsal and concert earlier this term and this time they were joined by woodwind, brass and percussion players. It was a wonderful sight to see 90 young musicians playing together and to hear their rousing rendition of Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kiev and Martin’s Scottish Dances. The strings began the concert with three pieces of their own which they played with confidence and a lovely, warm balanced string sound.
— Janet Elston (Ensemble Lead)

Watch this space! We are already planning our next epic Christmas concert which will be in Truro Methodist Church on December 11th.
